CCE Schuyler and NYFOA Team Up to Provide a Fun Morning of Hiking and Learning.

On May 21st CCE Schuyler and the NY Forest Owners Association (NYFOA) Southern Finger Lakes Chapter hosted birding and wildflower walks in the Arnot Teaching and Research Forest.  The morning walk began with Audubon NY Forest Program Manager Suzanne Treyger educating participants about the feathered inhabitants of the forest. Since foliage makes it hard to see some birds, hikers learned how to identify diverse bird species through their songs. Participants saw, and heard, a wide range of species while exploring a restored section of the forest.

Following the conclusion of the birding walk, CCE Schuyler Environmental Educator Marissa Nolan led everyone along one of the forest roads and pointed out the numerous spring wildflowers that graced the edges.  The group learned about past medicinal uses for plants, invasive plant species, how to cope with them, and some restoration successes with native wildflowers.

Thanks to the success of this series, CCE Schuyler is planning similar walks for the future.
