Earth Day and Arbor Day

Two of my favorite annual causes for celebration are coming up this weekend with Earth Day on Wednesday (4/22) and Arbor Day on Friday (4/24) – and also a birthday, but I’m not sure 51 is still cause for celebration? planting a tree

Tree planting is a common activity around this time, but it may be too late if you haven’t already bought your trees for this spring.  The good news, however, is that it’s not too late to start thinking about your tree planting project next spring!  Tree planting, especially in the form of seedlings, requires diligent planning and preparation to be successful.  A forestry professor of mine used to say that if you don’t do the work ahead of time, you might as well dig a hole and stick your money in the ground instead of the seedling.

One of the best resources that I know of for what to consider before, during and after your planting project, search for the “Cornell Reforestation Bulletin” or download it at:http://www2.dnr.cornell.edu/ext/info/pubs/management/TreePlantingBulletin12-09.pdf
