Week of August 1st

This week I continued to work on the tick distribution map with ArcGIS. I also wrote and sent individual reports so that the volunteers could see what they collected. Some people were surprised that not everything they put in the vial were actually ticks! When I was sorting through shipments, I came across many weevils and other insects, as well as spiders and bits of dirt.

Lindsay and I drove up to Rochester on the 27th to share some tick resources with the community at the Monroe county CCE office. We brought a microscope and some tick samples with us; the kids that stopped by our table really liked seeing ticks up close. I got to share some of the tick information I’ve learned this summer with people, but I also learned a lot from others sharing their vector disease knowledge and bite prevention resources.
