Hyperlocal weather forecasting has the potential to increase farming productivity, improve highway safety, and reduce infrastructure damage by providing actionable, real-time weather information to these critical sectors. Cornell University is developing a hyperlocal weather forecasting system as part of the National Science Foundation-funded CIVIC Innovation Challenge Competition.
As the CIVIC Competition emphasizes input from the community, the research team is conducting a survey to gather ideas from farmers and community organizations, as well as from state and local governmental agencies.

More About Hyperlocal Weather Forecasting

Traditionally, weather forecasts are made by using data from satellites and distributed radar systems. These forecasts are restricted to larger geographic locations, such as districts and cities – accurate forecasting for more specific locations isn’t really possible using these systems.
A farm business owner needs more specific weather data. Hyperlocal weather forecasts would allow you to have access to weather forecasts for specific areas – like your farm.
To carry out this pinpoint weather forecasting, weather data is collected from sources closer to ground than the traditional weather radar systems or satellites. These sources include street cameras, drones, airplanes, cellphone towers and connected cars. These devices collect location-specific weather information, which helps provide accurate weather forecasts for specific locations – including farms!
