Communications Best Practices

Website and Social Media

It is important to keep your online presence active and current. This begins with your class website. Ensure that your website community manager is up to date with iModules training.

Class information, university news, or links to your other social media sites make your class website a great resource for classmates. Your class staff contact can work with your website community manager to source shareable Cornell content.

Class websites and social media pages can also be used as a archive of class history – photos, class-supported scholarships and projects, Reunion statistics, and current officer information should all be shared.

Quick Tips

  • Keep your class website up to date.
  • Post frequently and consistently – aim for once a week so that it will appear on your followers’ news feeds.
  • Share existing content from alumni.cornell.edu and news.cornell.edu that would be of interest to your classmates.

Staying Connected with Classmates

Class websites, blogs, and social media posts are a great way to feature classmates. You can showcase short bios of class officers on your website so that others can see the names and faces of those who support their class. This is also a great recognition tool.

Survey your classmates – ask classmates how they want to be engaged, how often, and with whom. Consider how classmates can be funneled to areas of interest beyond class affiliation.

Use opportunities like CALC to connect with local classmates who may have an interest in learning more about what class officers do. Invite them to a class dinner or meeting.

Connections don’t always have to be ‘in real time’ – consider special printed materials that tell stories such as a 50th Reunion yearbook.

Quick Tips

  • Soliciting feedback from classmates gives them a voice as members of the class and can strengthen class connections.
  • Draw upon nostalgia to encourage staying connected.
  • Post weekly or monthly, highlighting a classmate’s service to Cornell.

Using iModules

The iModules email tool allows classes to generate and distribute emails to your classmates. Many classes appreciate the freedom of sending emails to classmates without the strict email marketing protocols required in Alumni Affairs.

In addition, you can access training material for creating and updating content on your class website.

Quick Tips

  • Familiarize yourself with the iModules toolkit.
  • Know which class officers have administrative permissions for iModules emails and website editing. Reach out to your class staff contact if an officer’s iModules access needs to be added or removed.
