Team Project

A critical piece of the students’ hands-on learning is through the team project (4-5 students), where they design and develop a working proof-of-concept BI solution for a Cornell area using real data.  The projects are actual analytic challenges faced by a Cornell unit and the data used is real.  The proof-of-concepts created by the student teams may be used by the units as a blue print to implement a production system in the future.

The project work is divided into three milestones:

  • milestone 1 – Initial Requirements, logical dimensional data model, and ETL  documentation
  • milestone 2 – working ETL code and populated physical data model
  • milestone 3 – Data visualizations, short presentation to customer, and final documentation via ePortfolio

Each team documents their project in their own ePortfolio site.  The url for the team site is public, so students may use the site as a showcase of their project effort, on their resumes, linkedin, etc. The ePortfolio sites are also used by the client as documentation of potential solutions to their BI challenge.

  • CIT Service Management, use of ticketing and phone data to develop dashboard with standard metrics for measuring service performance

  • Cornell Animal Hospital, analysis of ER case data to determine viability of Animal Urgent Care service
