Apart of History or Left Behind: The Significance of Modern Political Activism and Social Justice
Although I was not able to interview Ms.Rosa Clemente, I was fortunately able to view a clip on YouTube when she visited Cornell’s Africana Studies & Research Center in 2017. Ms. Clemente is arguably one of the most influential social justice and political activists alive. She is a hip-hop activist, independent journalist, and community organizer from the United States. She has made history when she was the first Afro-Latina to run for the vice presidency on the Green Party ticket in 2008. Ms.Clemente’s talk on political activism and social justice is extremely insightful as it can be used today, ten years ago, or even twenty years from now. We live in a time of paradoxes. While we should be focusing on developing a common strategy to combat a global division, we are more divided than ever. We see progress in human rights, but no end to conflict. We are more accepting of diversity, however, prejudice is on the rise. We live in a time where we have more liberties than ever before, yet there is no end to injustice. There are several issues that separate us as a country. This split has led to widespread distrust, stifled social and economic progress, and even bloodshed. The significance and need of modern political activism and social justice is at an all time high.
