Strawberries: Berries are split or cracked

Splitting of berries occurs during cool weather after heavy rains

Underripe strawberry with lightning-shaped tear splitting skin into two halves. Tear stretches horizontally over the fruit. Skin edges near the tear are flared upwards and outwards.

… or in rarer instances, thrips feeding. Intense thrips feeding on fruit may cause splitting, along with small, seedy berries and bronzing between achenes. More thrips information.
