Stocker Cattle: Tips to Entering and Navigating the “Mid-Way” of Beef Production

Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Livestock Program Work Team (LPWT) is pleased to announce the second in a series of beef production virtual learning opportunities: Introduction to Stocker Cattle. Stocker cattle are typically light weight calves, either heifers or steers, that are successfully weaned and available to enter the beef production phase with the main objective of adding body weight efficiently and economically prior to the finishing phase. Many regions of New York are well suited for stocker cattle during our grazing season allowing producers to make use of lush pastures or underutilized acreage. On Thursday February 11, 2021 from 7pm to 8:30pm beef producers interested in learning more about stocker cattle are encouraged to register for the virtual program: Registration is free and is required by February 10, 2021 by visiting: https://tinyurl.com/2gf23cbk. Guest presenters include Beef Cattle Extension Specialist, Dr. Mike Baker and Jason Detzel, C.C.E. of Ulster Co. Livestock Educator and beef producer with first hand knowledge and experiences with stocker cattle. For additional information contact: Marylynn Collins // 315-368-8603 // mrm7@cornell.edu.

Grazing Management – online course – Thursdays, February 25th to April 1st – 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm – Grazing is more than simply turning livestock out onto a green pasture and hoping for the best. With sound grazing management, you can reduce your workload, keep your animals happier and healthier, and improve the overall productivity and profitability of your farm. Well-managed grazing systems also provide greater environmental benefits and enhance habitat for many wildlife species. In this course, you’ll learn the key concepts of successful grazing operations that can be adapted and successfully implemented on your own farm. The course focus will be on grazing ruminant livestock, but most of the information will be relevant to non-ruminant animals as well. Sponsored by the Cornell Small Farms Program – more information and registration is available at https://smallfarmcourses.com/p/bf-231-grazing-management/.
