With all of NYS in various severity of drought, it is very likely that if pasture has not run out, it will do so soon. Options are to wean early (feeding best feed to calves and poorer quality feed to cows), cull the cowherd deeper than normal and/or start feeding hay. Estimating hay needs is appropriate in a normal year, but even more important this year. I have edited a spreadsheet first developed at the University of Tennessee. It’s far from perfect and is not a replacement for balancing a ration. However it does give you a rough idea of where you stand relative to hay inventory and requirements. If you feed baleage or silage this tool is not designed to help with that decision. If that is the case and I get enough requests, I can work on building a spreadsheet for those feedstuffs.
