In Jason Detzel’s article in the Cornell Cooperative Extension Ulster County newsletter “Weekly Livestock & Field Crop Update”, he reprints an excellent excerpt from Julius Ruechel, discussing techniques to deal with drought. I encourage you to read it: Detzel_July26.
Mr Ruechel refers to calculating the Cattle Grazing Days on your farm. By projecting the number of days left in your grazing system, you can plan ahead regarding dealing with the shortage. I designed a spreadsheet specific to drought, in that I’m making the assumption that no regrowth has occurred and the forage that left to graze is very mature. You can access the spreadsheet here Estimating_Cattle_Grazing_Days. Let me know what you think.
