How can you tell when a titan arum is ready to flower?

There are three key things to look for, says greenhouse grower Paul Cooper:

  • Spadix growth slows. Wee Stinky had been growing at a clip of about 2 inches a day. But between Sunday morning and Monday morning grew only about .3 inches.
  • The spathe begins to flush burgundy on the side pressed against the spadix
  • The spathe starts to visibly pull away from the spadix, usually in the afternoon so that when it fully unfurls it’s night time.
