David A. Call Achievement Award

This award recognizes an Indigenous graduate or professional student who displays outstanding leadership, service, and commitment in pursuit of a graduate or a professional degree. It honors Dean Emeritus David L. Call, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (1978-1995). As dean, he provided tireless and loyal support for Indigenous students in higher education and remains a beloved friend of the American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program.

Awardee: Emily Harwell

Emily is finishing up her 2L at the Cornell Law School and is the current President of the Native American Law Student Association (NALSA). During a more than challenging year, Emily co-led the organization of a law summit with Yale’s NALSA focusing on the intersections of Indigenous Nations, climate change and US/Canadian law aptly named, Indigenous Nations and Climate Change Summit 2021. Everything Emily has done during her time at Cornell has been to support the Native community. Emily worked for the Native American Rights Fund her 1L summer, helped coordinate a law school boot camp for native law students, and spent hours upon hours preparing and putting on a 3-day webinar about indigenous nations and climate change. This is only the tip of everything she has done throughout her two years at Cornell. If anyone deserves recognition for her leadership, service, and commitment, it is her.
