Youth

Defining Youth Audiences

Youth are separated into two groups:

  • Youth 3rd – 8th grade
  • Older Youth 9th – 12th grade
  • EFNEP will be delivered to youth or older youth who are in:
    • Families enrolled in EFNEP or who are EFNEP eligible.
    • School-based settings where at least 50% of the student population participates in the USDA National School Lunch Program (free or reduced-price meals). This includes after-school and summer camps/programs.
    • Community programs that intentionally reach youth from low-income families.

In New York State 4-H membership is limited to children enrolled in third grade through age 19 years. Third graders must turn 8 by January 1 of the current 4-H year, and teenagers may not enroll or re-enroll if they will turn 19 before January 1 of the new club year (October 1 to September 30).

In New York State, nutrition education is not provided to youth less than 8 years of age.  This audience is reached through family education.  See Adults and Young Adults.
