Day 4 – Gluten Free at The Straight

Day 4

We decided to do lunch at Willard Straight Hall yesterday.  We went in thinking that we were going to have a lack of options for gluten free food due to the fact that The Straight has mostly retail units.  Boy were we wrong!

I had an amazing omlett, yes for lunch, with bacon!!!  I did not know that the omlett came with toast; so you will have to ask for gluten free bread for your toast.  I also had a bowl from the fusion station with peanut noodles and lots of veggies and chicken.

Brandon and Marie had some delicious looking salads.  Brandon also got salmon cooked to order, as it was the special that day.

The staff at Willard Straight were more than happy to check if any of the indridents contained gluten.

Milk alternatives for Gluten & Dairy-free team

All the board plan units have a selection of milk alternatives such as soy and rice milks.  Just find the “special cooler”.

Helpful staff make the difference

Devon Langstaff, a lead cook in Becker House, really knows her ingredients and food allergens. She can direct customers to exactly what foods they can eat.  Additionally, Becker house has a “behind the counter” self serve gluten-free station for making pizza, sandwiches, & bagels; and there are always vegan pies that help the gluten-dairy free diners feel included in the dessert scene

An afternoon latte

One of the frequent themes I’ve seen from my colleagues this week talking about their 5 Days experiences is the challenge of changing their coffee and tea habits. I almost always drink black coffee, so going dairy-free wouldn’t be a huge problem for me in the coffee arena anyway.

An afternoon latte from Carol’s Cafe.

Since I’m doing my 5 Days with a gluten-free diet, there aren’t a lot of workplace beverages I need to think about! But every once in a while I like to indulge in a latte or a cappuccino. Italians, who invented these wondrous espresso-based drinks, roll their collective eyes at us silly Americans for drinking them anytime other than in the morning, but that’s OK. I find I’m most interested in one in the afternoon.

Conveniently, I work a short walk from Carol’s Cafe in Balch Hall’s Tatkon Center. A few minutes, and a few bucks, and I can indulge in a nice treat that doesn’t even pack many calories. Yes, I’m still looking forward to my next glutinous pizza or pasta or cake, or even just a baguette, but this indulgence will tide me over.

A One Bowl Meal

No matter what  your dietary restrictions are, the stir fry option at Risley Dining can accommodate your needs with big bold flavors emanating from an assortment of sauces, spice, vegetables, fruits and protein that make a complete meal in the bowl. A meal composed  at the stir fry station at Risley is a pleasantly addicting experience.stir fry-8 always ending on a high note!

Wednesday & Thursday

On Wednesday, a few from our GF team, along with Susan Whitaker and Matt Cochran, joined us at Risley for a nice gluten-free dining experience.  I enjoyed their popular stirfry with fresh vegetables, brown rice and sweet soy sauce.   There were a few sauces to choose from and I wasn’t sure which were actually GF, but the stir fry attendant was happy to assist me.  We enjoyed our meals together and a nice visit from Lorna, then topped it off with us each sharing a small piece of a GF brownie.

Thursday (today), Brandon took myself & Matthew Stockton to the Ivy Room which was a little more of a challenge to eat GF as their choices were somewhat limited to my liking.  I chose their salad bar with a large variety of their accompaniments and housemade herb vinaigrette.  It was deee-lish!  I’m looking forward to visiting Becker House tomorrow, and wearing our GF t-shirts.

Pass the bread and the Lactaid

lunch 3.6.14  Today is a bread kind of day.  First, I ended up sampling many day old gluten free breads and sandwiches to decided which one holds up better in the cooler and wrapped in plastic . Then I ate a bowl of dry Froot Loops, followed by a flour tortilla from Finger Lakes Fresh. What could be better than a plate full of focaccia bread, Tuscan Cauliflower and and apple.  The bread just looked good today. I think I’m good with carbs for the rest of the day.

Unfortunetly, this will be my last post of the 5 Days.  Gideon 0305141225ahasn’t seen his grandparents in quite some time, so tomorrow we will be traveling to the western part of NY for some quality family time.  I too will be visiting with my grandparents tomorrow for lunch.  They have told me that we are having pizza.  Now, this posses a few questions. 1. I can try to explain what I’m doing with being dairy free this week, which I already know the response I’ll get “What do you mean you can’t eat dairy; that’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard”, plus it’ll turn into a three hour conversation trying to get them to understand what dairy free is.  2. The wrath I’ll get for not eating the pizza.  The wrath of my grandparents lasts a long time, something I don’t want to get into when they’re getting up there in age. Part of the wrath is not receiving birthday cards filled with cash; and we all know how much fun that is.  So, tomorrow, pass the Lactaid, I’m eating the cheese!

Day 3 – Gluten Free at Risley

Day 3 was fantastic!

A group of us went to lunch at Risley, after hearing Chef Bradshaw talk about how many gluten free students go to Risley to eat.  We all voted on getting stir fry.  The wait was long for the stir fry station, but that’s because the students know where all the good eats are at!  I had rice noodles, pineapple, broccoli, spinach, chicken, and the gluten free sweet soy sauce.  It was worth the wait!  Every bite was just amazing 😀

The line started way -----------------------------------------> over here, but were close!

Chef Bradshaw also let us know that if you politely pop your head into the kitchen, they will plate your food in the back.  That was you are sure that all of the cookware and dishware have no cross contamination on them.  It was nice to know that the entire staff at Risley is always ready to go above and beyond for dietary restrictions.

Gluten Free Okenshields

Yum!  Great fig based salad dressing and many others to choose from as well. I enjoyed the Panamian Gluten Free chicken today along with a Indian spiced soup, cole slaw and several other sides. That Parvinder Chef guy really knows how to make food look and taste phenomenol!
