Shabbat Dinner with friends

I don’t think we could have picked a better way to finish the 5 day challange than to have shabbat dinner at 104 West. Team kosher was well represented with our team Captain Paul Muscente, then Chef Nery, Murray LaLonde, and of course, myself(Harry Ashendorf). Team Vegetarian was represented with Richard Anderson joining us, as well as team Dairy free with Ed Stinchcomb and Matthew Johnson rounding out our table.

Chef Kevin was a great host, entrees were extremely flavorful(brisket, roasted chicken, and tofu kabobs). The side dishes included one of my favorite in the potato kugal, then corn on the cobb, 104 West’s hummus, and a host of housemade salads. To finish this meal off was a beautiful cake.

This was a great eye opening experience to have to “travel” to get the meals necessary for my diet for the week, and not be able to just eat anywhere.

My Vegan 5 day photos and stories

I am on the VEGAN 5 day Cornell Dining TEAM and I had a great experience this week dining on only VEGAN items . I am an avid fan of meats cheese and other dairy products to I was interested to see how our Vegan students ate here at Cornell Dining .  My first lunch was at Bear on North Campus and I had fresh baked pizza bread with herbs and a bowl of Vegan vegetable soup .I was very happy with my choices for my First meal . I could have also had a vegetarian burger and house made fries or a vegetable calzone but went with the vegetable soup and frsh baked bread ..YUM

Monday evening was Mardi Gras at RPCC and I always look forward to having some of my favorite items on Mardi Gras . Chef Hilda made it easy for all to eat wonderful foods from New Orleans . She had tranformed many items to be vegan and this made my day as I got all the smells and flavors of New Orlenas in my meal at RPCC .. Truth be told I really missed the grits and Grillades but after eating the other offering that were made with freshly ground spices and had so much depth of flavors I left happy  and proud to be working for Cornell .

I had more great vegan Meals at Northstar with Chef Harold and his skilled culinary TEAM.  Jean Tang made me a wonderful scrambled tofuand broccoli dish that would make anyone happy with flaovr added with fresh garlic and ginger .I could eat this all the time and be happy and satisfied .  Chef Cathy at Keeton House had a special on Wednesday evening called Wizard of Oz and had so many vegan items I was very happy Vegan creamed corn with soy milk was one of my favorites of the evening along with Vegan Apple Crumble .  I can see that it may not always be easy to eat Vegan but now my eyes have been opened by this process to look at every item and ask how can this be made for Vegans .Mashed potatoes are a very easy fix to make with EVOO and fresh herbs or roasted garlic or any number of other items to make the perfect mashed potatoes. We will look at food differently from now on. thats for sure . Vegan Lunch at Northstarvegan lunch on tuesdayVegan Lunch at Northstarvegan tofu and broccoli from Jean Tang

Kosher Day 3 Dinner

This afternoon was quite busy for me, so much that I almost forgot to go eat dinner tonight.  It was about 640pm when I realized how hungry I was and that Kosher closes at 7pm. I arrived at Kosher to find a few people still there enjoying their meals. Tonight’s offerings were, Smashed Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans with Garlic and something called a Deli Roll. I will admit I was a bit intimidated by the Deli roll at first, it looked a bit unappetizing but upon speaking with the staff I was informed that it sells out every time they serve it at the NorthStar Kosher satellite station. I was very happy and surprised to find out the Deli Roll was a puff pastry shell filled with Pastrami, Corned beef and Turkey, it also had a bit of Dijon mustard in it that gave it a nice tangy taste. Since I was in a hurry to get back to West Campus to supervise House dinners, I completely forgot AGAIN to get some yummy Ice Cream novelties. Luckily I can eat some cookies at the houses tonight, since they are O/U certified.kosher 3.2

Kosher Day 2 & 3

Had a great meal at 104West! last night. I was really hoping to get up to Northstar to check out their setup, but i found out online that they serve the same dinner meal. I had Meatloaf, Roasted Potatoes and a Stuffed Pepper. It certainly doesn’t look like much on the plate, and i will admit i thought it was going to be dry.. But it was DELICIOUS, very moist and flavorful, I was pleasantly surprised!

Today for Lunch I stopped by 104West again, and first let me say, I have been missing out the last few days by not trying something from Chef Sue on the grill. I had her make me up a stir fry with snap peas and broccoli, Lo Mein and their house sauce. WOW! Is the only way to describe that… I also tried the Crunchy Fish, Haddock,  a slice of Cheese pizza, and I deviled into the desserts today. I am a tad upset with myself that it took me 3 days to figure out that they had Ice Cream Novelties available in the freezer, did someone say Nutty Cone? Oh yeah!  Of course, I also had to get a Banana so I felt somewhat better about scarfing some donuts and cookies.

My first Vegan Day

Had a very nice vegan lunch at Bethe House today, Soup, Salad, Bean stew, Roasted potato and Carrots, and topped it off with a small piece of apple pie. yum yum

Dinner was great also, I had a lentil stew over brown rice, actually went back for seconds. I have a nice vegetable medley and some peaches for dessert.

The pizza looked very good, but I can have that next week, maybe we can do a vegan pizza, that would be nice.
We also had a nice garden burger at the grill and fries I also missed my vanilla milkshake, but actually I feel very satisfied. not bad for my first day, I look forward to tomorrow.

Variety of Dairy Free Options

Catching up on my Dairy Free Adventure.

Mardi Gras

Last night I attended Mardi Gras at RPME. There was a lot of great food to choose from Gumbo, Jambalaya, Dirty Rice, Jambalaya, and much more. I felt fortunate to have such a selection and everything was quite tasty. I did have to pass on the bread pudding which is one of my favorite desserts. Since I am staying true to a Dairy Free diet even when off campus for the week, I scoured our cupboards for a snack when I got home. I soon realized how much dairy is a sub component of many of the foods I eat on a daily basis. I finally settled on a granny smith apple which was quite good.

Burrito

This morning I went to Trillium for a scrumptious breakfast burrito. The portion is generous! The staff were helpful navigating the options and even checked to ensure the potatoes were not grilled in butter! Not to worry…they aren’t

Laissez les bons temps rouler

The good times were rolling at Robert Purcell Marketplace this evening with delicious food and the Bayou sounds of Gumbo Ya Ya along with a sprinkling of beads.

The maque choux (creamed whole corn and limas), collard greens, candied yams, and blackened tofu and vegan jumping jambalaya stuffed peppers did not disappoint. image

The root beer float, king’s cake and bread pudding wrapped it all up and left me missing the bayou and longing to second line.
