Shabbat Dinner with friends

I don’t think we could have picked a better way to finish the 5 day challange than to have shabbat dinner at 104 West. Team kosher was well represented with our team Captain Paul Muscente, then Chef Nery, Murray LaLonde, and of course, myself(Harry Ashendorf). Team Vegetarian was represented with Richard Anderson joining us, as well as team Dairy free with Ed Stinchcomb and Matthew Johnson rounding out our table.

Chef Kevin was a great host, entrees were extremely flavorful(brisket, roasted chicken, and tofu kabobs). The side dishes included one of my favorite in the potato kugal, then corn on the cobb, 104 West’s hummus, and a host of housemade salads. To finish this meal off was a beautiful cake.

This was a great eye opening experience to have to “travel” to get the meals necessary for my diet for the week, and not be able to just eat anywhere.

Kosher Diet

It has been a challenging week. The breakfast and lunch options are very few if you are not eating at 104 west or Appel… I’m looking forward to my last kosher dinner and reporting my dining experience to our Dining Leadership.

One last Gluten-Free lunch on campus

“Finally Friday” has even more meaning for me than usual, as it’s the last of 5 Days eating all my meals and snacks without gluten. This has been a tremendous education for me, and I can tell from the dozens of other blog posts this week that it has been for my colleagues in Cornell Dining, as well.

No bun? No problem!

No bun? No problem!

For my last 5 Days lunch, on such a nice day, I decided to head to West Campus and 104West!, Cornell’s remarkable multicultural dining room. It’s not just Kosher but Halal, as well, and I’ve enjoyed my meal every time I’ve been there. Best of all, Friday is burgers and dogs day!

Unfortunately, unlike some of the eateries I’ve been to this week, 104West! doesn’t have any gluten-free alternative bread, such as hamburger rolls, available. There is such a thing as Kosher gluten-free bread, but that may be too niche a market for Cornell Dining to stock it. No worries, I’ve had a burger without a bun before! This time, I topped the delicious hand-ground beef patty with some tomatoes and fresh guacamole.

One nice thing about eating Kosher meat is you know there are no fillers added. This was a great burger! Veggieburgers are available, too, but those are labeled as containing wheat, so that’s out for today.

Great salad bar at 104West!... but no bacon bits or crispies for me!

Great salad bar at 104West!… but none of these faux “bacon” bits or crispies for me!

I also availed myself of 104West!’s extensive salad bar, which includes tofu and hard-boiled eggs to boost the protein of your meal if you’re not having meat. But wait! Are those bacon bits?! Bacon wouldn’t be Kosher even at a meat meal, such as Friday lunch here, so the 104West! salad bar features soy “bacon” bits! I was curious to try these, but since they’re processed or manufactured food, I figured I’d better ask if they were gluten-free. Sure enough, they’re not. They contain wheat flour.

The dessert table also had lots of temptation, including some beautiful-looking baklava, but I had to pass. I’ll come back for some of that baklava another time, though. Of course, I realize hundreds of people on the Cornell campus can’t just stop eating gluten-free, the way I can after this week. I’m lucky, and after 5 Days, much better informed.

Dairy free? Gluten Free? Vegan? Vegetarian? Meat Lover? Kosher?

Welcome to Carl Becker House!  Where you will find an eclectic variety of these foods on a daily basis with dietary restriction requests made to order…. only a few “short” minutes walk to Kosher Dining and Chef Kevin Moore’s fabulous Kosher foods that are not available at Becker.  Hope to see you meet you soon at Becker! Yum!!

Kosher Day 4 Lunch

Took the walk again today to 104West! For lunch I had a pizza bagel, Stir Fry, some pasta salad and some Baklava. The best part of my lucnh today was being recognized by a few of the students there for my Blog and effort to maintain a Kosher diet for the week.  They were very thankful for Dining in taking part in this 5-Days challenge. I was thoughtfully corrected about my post yesterday regarding no Ice Cream for dinner, I was reminded that Dairy is not served for dinner when it is served for lunch. Another student was excited to read about my posts as a shout out to Kosher in general and for helping to bring awareness to our Kosher offerings.  I will be off tomorrow but I hope to try and come in and check out their Lunch, I was told by one of the students that it is the best meal of the week.  Our team is also meeting for Shabbat Dinner, and that would be something nice to experience. kosher 4.1

Kosher Day 2 & 3

Had a great meal at 104West! last night. I was really hoping to get up to Northstar to check out their setup, but i found out online that they serve the same dinner meal. I had Meatloaf, Roasted Potatoes and a Stuffed Pepper. It certainly doesn’t look like much on the plate, and i will admit i thought it was going to be dry.. But it was DELICIOUS, very moist and flavorful, I was pleasantly surprised!

Today for Lunch I stopped by 104West again, and first let me say, I have been missing out the last few days by not trying something from Chef Sue on the grill. I had her make me up a stir fry with snap peas and broccoli, Lo Mein and their house sauce. WOW! Is the only way to describe that… I also tried the Crunchy Fish, Haddock,  a slice of Cheese pizza, and I deviled into the desserts today. I am a tad upset with myself that it took me 3 days to figure out that they had Ice Cream Novelties available in the freezer, did someone say Nutty Cone? Oh yeah!  Of course, I also had to get a Banana so I felt somewhat better about scarfing some donuts and cookies.

Kosher Day 2

Day two started off late this morning as  I came into Campus around noon and went to 104West! for some lunch to begin my day. The staff  was super friendly, as always, and they had some great smelling offerings today. I went with the Spinach, Feta, Tomato personal pizza. I also had some of the Garlic bread, VERY GOOD!, and some tortellini Salad. They also had an all veggie and a cheese  personal pizza available, as well as Grilled Cheese, Stir fry and some other options. You cannot leave this place hungry, they even had some donuts today! I ate them for dessert, it was wonderful. I’m still debating to go North for dinner tonight or walk back over to 104West, guess I’ll check out the online menus first.. Until Then…  Enjoy Fat Tuesday! kosher 2

Kosher Lunch at 104West!

Our Kosher team ate at 104West! this afternoon, it was our first team get together. I was surprised by the assortment of offerings available. There was Stir Fry to order, Calzones, a very nice fresh salad bar, and a great assortment of desserts. They also had omelets, Quessadilla’s and wraps available to order, and made fresh right in front on your eyes while you wait. I will admit that after only having some cereal for breakfast I had to do some digging around to find a few snacks before lunch today. I was able to identify that our fresh baked in house cookies are O/U certified as well as a number of our french fry offerings. I must point out though, I’m not sure how “kosher” the fries are after going into oil that has been used for other foods….  So, I may not be eating strictly Kosher, but Kosher certified works for me. I am looking forward to lunch tomorrow, Personal pan pizzas. I may also check out the Kosher offerings at Northstar for dinner tomorrow night.  I am having trouble loading pics right now but I will try and follow up with them later.
