Took the walk again today to 104West! For lunch I had a pizza bagel, Stir Fry, some pasta salad and some Baklava. The best part of my lucnh today was being recognized by a few of the students there for my Blog and effort to maintain a Kosher diet for the week. They were very thankful for Dining in taking part in this 5-Days challenge. I was thoughtfully corrected about my post yesterday regarding no Ice Cream for dinner, I was reminded that Dairy is not served for dinner when it is served for lunch. Another student was excited to read about my posts as a shout out to Kosher in general and for helping to bring awareness to our Kosher offerings. I will be off tomorrow but I hope to try and come in and check out their Lunch, I was told by one of the students that it is the best meal of the week. Our team is also meeting for Shabbat Dinner, and that would be something nice to experience.
Kosher Day 4, Breakfast
I didn’t expect to be working early today but as luck would have it I am here. Knowing Kosher was not open for breakfast, I decided to poke around and ask staff about what might at least be O/U certified. I was happy to find out that at the Bethe House Oatmeal bar,(a new station I highly suggest you check out) our Regular Oatmeal and our Steel Cut Oats are both certified. I added some Brown sugar and Cranberries to add some pizzazz… I completed the meal with a Banana. Not sure if anyone else is aware but I also found out today that our Pepsi products are all certified, so most anything you get through the soda dispenser is O/U, but feel free to ask the staff if you are unsure. Until lunch time…
Kosher Day 3 Dinner
This afternoon was quite busy for me, so much that I almost forgot to go eat dinner tonight. It was about 640pm when I realized how hungry I was and that Kosher closes at 7pm. I arrived at Kosher to find a few people still there enjoying their meals. Tonight’s offerings were, Smashed Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans with Garlic and something called a Deli Roll. I will admit I was a bit intimidated by the Deli roll at first, it looked a bit unappetizing but upon speaking with the staff I was informed that it sells out every time they serve it at the NorthStar Kosher satellite station. I was very happy and surprised to find out the Deli Roll was a puff pastry shell filled with Pastrami, Corned beef and Turkey, it also had a bit of Dijon mustard in it that gave it a nice tangy taste. Since I was in a hurry to get back to West Campus to supervise House dinners, I completely forgot AGAIN to get some yummy Ice Cream novelties. Luckily I can eat some cookies at the houses tonight, since they are O/U certified.
Kosher Day 2 & 3
Had a great meal at 104West! last night. I was really hoping to get up to Northstar to check out their setup, but i found out online that they serve the same dinner meal. I had Meatloaf, Roasted Potatoes and a Stuffed Pepper. It certainly doesn’t look like much on the plate, and i will admit i thought it was going to be dry.. But it was DELICIOUS, very moist and flavorful, I was pleasantly surprised!
Today for Lunch I stopped by 104West again, and first let me say, I have been missing out the last few days by not trying something from Chef Sue on the grill. I had her make me up a stir fry with snap peas and broccoli, Lo Mein and their house sauce. WOW! Is the only way to describe that… I also tried the Crunchy Fish, Haddock, a slice of Cheese pizza, and I deviled into the desserts today. I am a tad upset with myself that it took me 3 days to figure out that they had Ice Cream Novelties available in the freezer, did someone say Nutty Cone? Oh yeah! Of course, I also had to get a Banana so I felt somewhat better about scarfing some donuts and cookies.
Kosher Day 2
Day two started off late this morning as I came into Campus around noon and went to 104West! for some lunch to begin my day. The staff was super friendly, as always, and they had some great smelling offerings today. I went with the Spinach, Feta, Tomato personal pizza. I also had some of the Garlic bread, VERY GOOD!, and some tortellini Salad. They also had an all veggie and a cheese personal pizza available, as well as Grilled Cheese, Stir fry and some other options. You cannot leave this place hungry, they even had some donuts today! I ate them for dessert, it was wonderful. I’m still debating to go North for dinner tonight or walk back over to 104West, guess I’ll check out the online menus first.. Until Then… Enjoy Fat Tuesday!
Kosher Lunch at 104West!
Our Kosher team ate at 104West! this afternoon, it was our first team get together. I was surprised by the assortment of offerings available. There was Stir Fry to order, Calzones, a very nice fresh salad bar, and a great assortment of desserts. They also had omelets, Quessadilla’s and wraps available to order, and made fresh right in front on your eyes while you wait. I will admit that after only having some cereal for breakfast I had to do some digging around to find a few snacks before lunch today. I was able to identify that our fresh baked in house cookies are O/U certified as well as a number of our french fry offerings. I must point out though, I’m not sure how “kosher” the fries are after going into oil that has been used for other foods…. So, I may not be eating strictly Kosher, but Kosher certified works for me. I am looking forward to lunch tomorrow, Personal pan pizzas. I may also check out the Kosher offerings at Northstar for dinner tomorrow night. I am having trouble loading pics right now but I will try and follow up with them later.
Day 1 – Kosher
Breakfast time.. What is kosher for Breakfast? That’s the thought that went through my head this morning as I began my day on West Campus. I open up the Dining webpage to see what 104West! is serving today. Oh no What! , they aren’t open for breakfast; oh boy what am I going to do? Lunch is served 11am-2pm and dinner 5pm-7pm, I can’t wait till 11am to eat, coffee isn’t going to do it by itself.. I look at the line, Pork Sausage, ah… NOPE… Hmmm… I begin to ask some of the staff if they get requests for Kosher food in the mornings, as I usually work in the evening, so it’s not something that comes up often. Most the staff agrees that have never been asked for a kosher breakfast. I’m pretty sure “kosher people” don’t just skip breakfast every morning, so I go out back to our storage room and start poking around. Luckily for me, I spot and “O, U” symbol on our Malt-o-Meal cereal boxes.. I think, Cool, that’s Kosher, right? O, U.. I recognize the label from my catering days, but I honestly had no idea what it meant… So, time to do a little more research… I found a site, oukosher.org. I start doing some reading and find out O/U is basically the Orthodox Union, best known for its kosher food preparation supervision service. Hence, these products get this mark because they have been certified as prepared in a “kosher” way. So I guess I’m going to start my morning with some cereal….
