Incognito Mosquito ??

To be Gluten and Dairy free you HAVE to be a detective!!

To be Gluten and Dairy free you HAVE to be a detective!!

As a child my favorite book series was that of the adventures of “Incognito Mosquito, Private Insective” and with the 5 Day Challenge I’ve found that all the investigative training from way back then has come in very handy!

My team is Gluten /Dairy free and the challenge has been a real test. Gluten is hidden in most everything.  Dairy is a clearer villain to track.  Reading all ingredient labels and asking question after question is absolutely necessary before popping anything into my mouth.  It must be a continuous struggle to remain true to this dietary restriction and I am in awe of those that have it as a way of life.

I will not be deterred however, if you see someone  creeping around in a long trenchcoat looking food items over with a magnifying glass, no fear – it’s just me “Susan Sherlock, Super (Gluten/ Dairy) Sleuth!

Risley’s Tuan Tran working his magic at the stir fry station

So who says a Gluten/Dairy free diet has to be bland and boring??  I was starting to think so … eating apples and bananas with peanut butter, and all those plain vegetables blahh…..

I'm smiling, but I didn't want to stop eating this delicious stir fry!

I’m smiling, but I didn’t want to stop eating this delicious stir fry!

But fear not, today I made it to Risley Dining for a “Lunch Extraordinaire.”  Who knew Tuan Tran could fry up delectable  scrumptiousness from rice noodles, kimchi, edamame, mushrooms, broccoli, carrots and chinese cabbage – topped with GF sweet soy sauce, and a dab of red curry sauce?  I carried on so about how good it was the rest of my table mates had their personal variations whipped up.  It might be a secret how fabulous this station is, however, the enthusiasm, motivation, and readiness to make your stir fry exactly the way you want by the cook should not be.  It was so yummy I forgot that I was pining for a piece of crusty bread and a big chunk of cheese!

Challenge Day 2:  A visit to One World Cafe served up really delicious lunches today!

Hummus platter consisting of romaine, olives, tomato, hummus, cucumber, corn chips, miso dressing.

Tagine vegetable stew with white rice and vegetables, corn chips on the side.  YUM!!

Dairy Denial???

So it is day 2 in my Gluten/Dairy free diet and I’m having nightmares of visits from large black and white, four legged animals that say “Moo.”  I am reminded of a favorite milk quote:

I asked the waiter, “Is this milk fresh?” he said, “Lady three hours ago it was grass..” – Phyllis Diller

It seems that I could possibly be missing my dairy products and it might take me a bit longer to fully immerse myself in this new role. To tame the beast within, I scurried over to Carol’s Cafe again this morning to pick up a “Very Vanilla” Silk soybean milk and promptly followed the directions on the top, “Shake Well and Buy Often.”  Good flavor, I could get used to this, and they tell me the chocolate is even better!

Gluten/Dairy free Day 1

Cornell Dining office candy dish!!

Cornell Dining office candy dish!!

In anticipation of Day 1 eating a Gluten/Dairy free diet I visited my small rural grocery store (Ovid, NY) and found that they had almond milk for my dairy replacement.  I was delighted and planned to bring it in and keep it in the fridge for my private stash to use in my daily caffeine fix.  I forgot it!  Visited Carol’s Cafe in the Carol Tatkon Center and found vanilla soy milk as a not so bad substitute, however there wasn’t much more, than the banana and apple that I took away, for me to eat there. Careful label reading proved that most items contained either dairy or gluten, Boo!  Tomorrow I will venture further beyond a small retail unit. P.S. I love the note attached to the office candy dish upon my arrival this morning!  Thanks Gail!
