Phytophthora Blight

Crops most commonly affected are cucurbits, pepper, and eggplant.  Phytophthora blight (caused by Phytophthora capsici) is arguably the most destructive disease for these crops and also the most challenging disease to manage.  Other susceptible crops are tomato, lima bean, and snap bean.

Key points about management: Success can be achieved with a proactive, preventive, integrated program that includes multiple cultural practices to avoid favorable conditions (saturated soil) and minimize pathogen spread on to a farm as well as within and between fields, including promptly destroying affected plants.  But an intense rainfall when soil is moist can thwart success.
