Trump campaign has plans to launch its own social networking app

For the upcoming presidential election next year, the Trump campaign has made plans to launch its own social networking app. By doing so, they aim to “harness the fervent energy among his legion of supporters” (Politico). The app will feature a prize system, offering rewards such as VIP seats to rallies or a photo with Trump, providing incentive for supporters to recruit friends and donate. The app will also be used to gather user data and provide better insight into the demographics that are in support of Trump.

“Ahead of the 2020 presidential election, the Trump campaign is building a digital operation unrivaled by Democrats in its use of data-mining techniques and algorithms, the Los Angeles Times reported in June. It has spent millions in small Facebook ad buys to reach a large swath of voters in key battleground states” (Business Insider).

I thought this was very interesting because Trump has already revolutionized the way Americans, as a society, choose their political alignments and who to cast their votes for. Trump’s campaign is distinct from others because of the fact that social networking and social media are instrumental tools for spreading his message and influence. Known for his frequent Twitter use, Trump has turned U.S. politics into something that you cannot avoid seeing while on the Internet, whether it be on news outlets or on other platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
