The 6th floor of Olin Library will open on Friday, November 19, at 8 a.m. Collections (call numbers A, F, and P-PG) will be accessible immediately at opening. Access to the west-end seminar and graduate student rooms is expected early next week after the painters have finished in those rooms and we have moved the furniture back from storage. The 5th floor (call numbers D-E) remains closed as construction continues on that floor. Construction also continues in the 1st floor 106 office suite. Temporary locations for all relocated staff during the project is available at the Olin circulation and reference desks.
Also, this Friday, there will be activity outside the building as workers lay asphalt for a path to a temporary entrance that will be constructed on the north side of the building, just to the east of the Cafe. This temporary entrance will be necessary in order to close the front entrance to the building on December 17 to accommodate the first phase of construction in the public areas on the 1st floor. Those of you who were at Cornell in 2005 may remember that we successfully created a temporary entrance in this same location because another Olin project necessitated closing the front entrance.

The major move of collections between Olin and Uris in preparation for the fire safety project has been completed. (For details, see update of May 19 below).
Next steps include the move of graduate reading rooms collections as the floors are closed for construction. All faculty and graduate students on the floors under construction will need to vacate their studies or carrels. For the latest update on expected schedule (subject to change) see https://blogs.cornell.edu/firesafety/schedule/

May 19, 2010
As part of the Olin Library fire safety improvements project, we are beginning some major Olin/Uris collections moves on May 24th, 2010. Here is a general outline:
- All materials currently in Uris that are duplicates will be moved to the Annex; patrons will be able to request them using the normal Annex request procedures. We will monitor their use and at the end of the project will make a decision on which ones are coming back to the Olin/Uris complex.
- All materials in call number ranges A-P currently in Uris that are unique will be integrated in the Olin stacks (permanently).
- All current Olin materials in the call number ranges Q-Z will be transferred to Uris (permanently). All unique Uris materials in Q-Z will remain in Uris. This means that the collections in Olin and Uris will be distributed by call number ranges: A-P in Olin, Q-Z in Uris.
- All Olin theses will be moved to Uris.
- To accommodate the sprinklers and pipe work during the fire safety project, all top shelves on floors 3-7 will be temporarily removed and either interfiled on the same floor or staged separately on the same floor with a shelf-encoding system that will allow staff to retrieve the materials if patrons are unable to find them.
- There are a number of smaller moves that have either already happened or will be happening at various stages of the fire safety project:
- The current newspapers that are normally kept on the lower level in Olin have all been moved to the Dean Room in Uris.
- The material in B52 (not open to the public), which included some 19th-century newspapers, has either been sent to the Annex as rare or regular material, or moved to the stacks on the lower level of Olin.
- The Maps and Media collections spaces (lower level), will, in all probability, be closed off to the public first. The maps will be paged for patrons and the media collection will be temporarily relocated to the South end of the lower level near the compact shelving and study area.
We will be posting signs and doing regular updates on the fire safety project web page (https://blogs.cornell.edu/firesafety/ ) but in general, patrons are encouraged to inquire at the desks if they cannot locate certain materials. The big book move should be finished by June 21st.
As floors become inaccessible due to construction (approximately 8 weeks each), library materials on them will be paged once a day on week days (M-F). Patrons will be able to request it in person, over the phone or through e-mail. The material will be available on the next business day. Paging can be done only when staff are accompanied by someone on the contractor’s team, so we have to work around this.

March 5, 2010
As part of the pre-construction enabling work for the Olin Library Fire Safety Improvements Project, there will an asbestos abatement of the corridor ceiling on the second floor that will occur over spring break. From noon on Friday, March 19 through Tuesday, March 23, the collections on the second floor of Olin (some Zs and theses) will be inaccessible to staff and users. If you are planning on using any of these over spring break, please make sure to check them out in advance of March 19th. We apologize for the inconvenience.
In keeping with standard practice, prior to the start of the work, Dale Houseknecht from Facilities Services will offer an asbestos information session on Monday, March 15 at 11 am-noon in Olin 703.
