David Cutter, a LA at Cornell University will speak about designing the Cornell campus to become carbon neutral by the year 2050.  The CU Sustainability initiative includes campus mapping, green roofs, open meadows, and lawn substitutes.  He will also touch on the new technologies used at the Brian C. Nevin Welcome Center (permeable pavement, structural soil, and the bio-swale area).

• · Steve Kenyon, a Holistic Management Educator/practitioner from Saskatchewan, Canada.  Steve will discuss, in two separate sessions, the business and the practice of custom grazing cattle for profit.  Additionally, Steve will touch upon Winter Management techniques that will have direct application to those of us in the cold Northeast. 
• Jerry Brunetti, one of the original organizers of the PASA conference and founder of Agri-Dynamics, a dairy nutritionist and an expert in human nutrition too, is going to discuss these two intimately related topics of animal and human health.  If we are what we eat, then we are what our animals eat.
• Jeremy Engh owns and runs Lakota Ranch in Virginia as well as running the Lakota Bull Test, an all-forage/grazing test for beef breed bulls.  While Jeremy is a Red Devon breeder and grass-finisher, the Lakota Bull Test accepts bulls from all beef breeds and measures their performance in contemporary groups, while also conducting Breeding Soundness Exams and other pertinent pre-breeding season data collection.  All this data is then provided to the bull owner/consignors and to the prospective customers of the Lakota Bull Test Sale.
• · Paul and Phyllis Van Amburgh, who own and operate Dharma Lea Farm in Sharon Springs, NY will discuss their approach to animal production on their Certified Organic, 100% grass-fed farm where they produce grass-fed beef along side their year round grass-fed dairy. 
• · Dr. tatiana Stanton, NY State’s Small Ruminant Specialist will talk about her initial research into applied pasture lambing and how the results compare to jug lambing.  tatiana will talk about these and other matters relating specifically to the pasture rearing and finishing of goats and sheep.

Each session runs from 6:30-8:30 PM at CCE-Albany Co., 24 Martin Rd, Voorheesville, NY 12186. The series costs $30 per farm (up to 2 people). The demand for locally raised meats and livestock products continues to grow.  Strategic and specific marketing efforts can help you take full advantage of the local foods market.  If you want to sharpen and focus your marketing skills or just don’t know where to begin developing a marketing plan, CCE can help! 

CCE has developed a series of workshops that will teach the basics of strategic marketing, including how to identify a target market and focus your farm’s marketing efforts.  You will also learn how to choose the markets that meet the needs of your farm, such as CSA, farmers’ market and wholesale.  Each participant will develop components of a marketing plan and create marketing materials.

While this series is tailored specifically to the marketing of meats and other livestock products, it will benefit any farm looking to improve their marketing efforts.

Cornell Cooperative Extension horticulture staff of the Capital District will present a six day class to become licensed pesticide applicators. Successful completion of the thirty-hour training course and exams will allow participants to be licensed by the NYSDEC as Certified Pesticide Applicators. Registration required. February 7, 2013 Farm Disaster Preparation Certificate Program, co-sponsored by CCE CAAHP and Farm Family Insurance at Farm Family, 344 Rte. 9W, Glenmont, NY 12077 from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.  The cost of the workshop is $35 per person. This 6-hour training program focuses on pre-disaster education and preparedness, covering key topics such as:

• Farm equipment safety on the road
• Barn fire and structure collapse prevention
• Minimizing storm damage, coping with power outages, and maintaining continuity of farm operations during community disasters
• Reducing criminal activity and stored chemical risks
• Enhancing livestock handling and biosecurity.

 Participants are expected to complete all five sections, by listening to a presentation, participating in discussion questions, and making notes about what they intend to inspect and modify back on the farm.

Participating farms should be able to withstand a farm emergency with a higher level of resiliency. We expect this will lead to fewer overall insurance claims among participating farms, a safer and more secure food supply, and farm families that have a greater sense of readiness for unknown disasters.

Several farm insurance companies in New York are acknowledging this program and will provide an incentive for farm owners to participate. Farms that complete the Farm Disaster Preparation Certificate training will receive a dated certificate to provide to their insurer. The certificate may be a condition of eligibility for receiving a more favorable farm insurance policy review or a discount on the farm’s annual insurance premium. The economic value of the recognition or discount will vary according to individual policies and policyholder circumstances.

Feb 10-12, 2013 ‘It Takes a Region’ Conference Rescheduled Due to Hurricane Sandy, the NESAWG conference was postponed. Originally scheduled for October 28-30, 2012, the Hurricane, road closures, and a state-of-emergency declaration convinced us to reschedule.  Please note that we are working with the hotel to apply fees to the rescheduled event and to negotiate a favorable reimbursement arrangement for those of you who are no longer able to attend. March 5-7, 2013 Farmers Market Manager Training Conference – “The Science of Farmers Markets”  The conference will be hosted by the Ithaca Farmers Market and held at La Tourelle Resort and August Moon Spa in Ithaca. The conference will focus on the operating issues of farmers markets.  Topics will include food safety, crisis management, working with market volunteers, understanding your consumers, financing your market, assessing your market’s economic impact and working with a board of directors.   A panel discussion will provide an opportunity to discuss issues with experienced managers who can answer your questions.  There’s also a session to help you find all the resources you need to make your market a success.

The conference will break mid-week for a tour through Cornell University. This tour will look at facilities and labs that are in operation and under construction to help educate New York’s farmers be up-to-date on new techniques and innovative in the creation of new value-added products. The University is there to support local agriculture, directly and through the Cooperative Extension system. Learn what Cornell is doing to keep New York agriculture on the cutting edge so that you can bring this vital information back to your farmers.

 2013 SABA Beginner Beekeeping Classes: Jan 9,16,23,30; Feb 6, 6:30 – 9 p.m.

     The Southern Adirondack Beekeepers Association (SABA) has gathered local experts and Master Beekeepers to teach a class geared toward new beekeepers and those who have had bees for a while but still need instruction.
      If you’ve been thinking about honey bees, here’s a class for you. If you might start with bees in spring 2013, now is the time to find out if beekeeping is right for you. You’ll learn how to buy and assemble equipment, where to place your hives, how to acquire bees, how to care for your growing colonies and how to prevent, identify and treat diseases. Though the first summer’s honey is mainly left for the bees to get through their first winter, harvesting will be touched upon briefly. Swarms, beeswax, flowers, queens, stings and more. The goal of this class is to help you begin beekeeping more confidently than if you were on your own.
     Class size is limited. The dates are January 9, 16, 23, 30; February 6, 6:30 – 9 p.m., Cornell Cooperative Extension Saratoga County, 50 West High St., Ballston Spa. The sixth and final class (open hive) will be in the spring; date and location to be announced. The fee for the classes is $80, which includes six classes, books, handouts, and a one year SABA membership. The Beekeeper’s Handbook (Sammataro and Avitabile) and Hive Management (Bonney) are required texts. Couples or family members in the same house who take the class together can share books.
