x Triticosecale
Poaceae grass family
Location: Small grains
Origin: Newest cereal grain is a cross between wheat and rye first bred in the late 1800s.
Biophysical Requirements: Combines the yield potential and grain quality of wheat with the disease and environmental tolerance (including soil conditions) of rye.
Food Uses: The kernels are large and shrunken which accounts for its high protein content. Seed protein of triticale contains more lysine and sulfur containing amino acids than wheat protein. Grown mostly for fodder.
