Origin: Central to South America.

Biophysical Requirements: Adapted to moderately warm climates and is sensitive to cold.

Food Uses: The fresh roots contain 28% carbohydrate (25% of which is sugar, 75% is starch) and are used primarily for food. The leaves are also consumed to some extent. Often called “yam” in North America (incorrectly).
