Location: Sugar, fiber and root crops

Origin: While the origins of common beet are in the Mediterranean Basin and Near East, sugar beet was developed in Germany in the late 1700s.

Biophysical Requirements: This root crop is grown in temperate regions on fertile soils, pH 6 to 7.5, with ample rainfall or with irrigation.

Food Uses: The fleshy roots yield 20 to 30 tons per acre with 10 to 20% sugar.
