Location: Oil seeds

Origin: Origin of cultivated sesame may be India although wild sesame found in Africa. Grown widely in the tropics. In the U.S. it is grown in the southwest.

Biophysical Requirements: Extensive roots make plants drought tolerant but will not tolerate water-logged soils.

Food Uses: The seed contains 50‐56% oil, and is used for salad oil; the seeds are sprinkled on breads, rolls, and cookies before baking to impart a nutty flavor.
