Origin: Native to Africa.

Biophysical Requirements: A member of the Euphorbiaceae family and hence not a true “bean,” it is a short‐lived perennial in the tropics; an annual, up to 4 m (12 feet) high. Its main production is in India, China, and Brazil.

Uses:  Seeds contain about 50% nonedible castor oil which is used in lubricants, cosmetics, and soaps. The seed contains a highly toxic protein, ricin.
