Origin: Central America
Biophysical Requirements: A C4 plant and close relative of several highly invasive and competitive weeds. Grows best in warm regions and can tolerate relatively dry conditions.
Food Uses: Its very small grains consist primarily of starch, with 14% protein, which is high in lysine, complementing maize in the diet.
