[1] To make comparisons between decades, 2010 block data were allocated to 2020 block boundaries using a land areal-weighting estimation procedure. For example, if 40% of a 2010 block’s land area fell within a new 2020 block, then 40% of the 2010 population from that block was allocated to the new 2020 block. Applying this estimation procedure throughout the data results in some [negligible] discrepancies between official PL 94-171 data and the totals shown above.
[2] The Racial-Ethnic Diversity Index shown above is loosely the probability that two persons drawn at random from a census block identify with different racial-ethnic groups. The index ranges from 0 (no diversity – all residents identify with the same group) to 100 (maximum diversity – all residents identify with different groups). The overall 2020 index value for the Buffalo-Niagara region is 44.5, up from 35.1 in 2010. In other words, the region became more racially and ethnically diverse over the past decade. The higher the index value, the greater the degree of diversity.
