Our 4th meeting started off amazing and welcoming as we all went around to talk about current events that had either bothered us or grabbed our attention. I felt as though this meeting was the most conversation//discussion based yet which I really enjoy. I feel it gives the teen cohort a space to talk about what they really feel. Our topic focused on Microaggressions and Cultural Appropriation. We spoke about times in which we have felt like victims of a microaggression as well as what the term really means. The teens learned about the 3 ways in which microaggressions are carried out which includes verbal, behavioral, and environmental ways. Katherine and I wanted to focus on understanding these definition therefore, when we moved onto talking about cultural appropriation, we asked the teens what they thought of it at first. All of the teens understood the complexity of the issue as the biggest opposing argument in this topic is cultural appreciation. After having more discussions and watching an insightful video about context with Ta-Nehisi Coates, we split off into breakout rooms again to work on brainstorming and finalizing their own projects for the Final Showcase.
