Week 6/28

This week was really great! It was the first week of the Act for Change program to start and it was by far all worth the stress it took to put it together. The students were super open to the activities we had designed. To get to know everyone, we decided that we were going to lead with the activity of turning off our cameras and describing our social identities and why these specific descriptions are important to us. We wanted to use this activity as the immediate thing to do since people make judgements based on appearance all of the time. Especially, with this type of program and what we are aiming for the students to learn, we want to emphasize that we all have biases that could potentially direct us away from talking to one another. However, if we eliminate that initially and learn more about each other, we are able to be much more open. Katherine and I were excited to try this out and it worked out very well! We continued the program by making collective agreements to create a safe space. Katherine and I are super excited for next week!
