July 26: Plant Science Renovation Update

Project Brief

This gut renovation project will reconfigure floor layouts, restore the exterior building envelope, replace the exterior windows, replace the Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing & Life Safety systems, and generally modernize the facility to meet the School of Integrative Plant Science’s Instructional and Research needs in the 21st century.

  • The project obtained B&P’s Construction Approval on March 23, 2023.
  • FAHS Construction is the General Contractor.
  • The 30-month Construction period began on July 5, 2023, and is scheduled for substantial completion in January 2026.

Progress Update

  • Exterior masonry cleaning is ongoing.
  • The new Air Handling Unit was delivered on site on July 17th.
  • Work at the breezeway/dog trot which began on June 11th will be extended through August 9th. Please refer to the “potential occupant disruptions” section below for additional info.
  • Mock-up window units were installed on July 16th on the east facing walls of the East courtyard, on Ground and First floors. The testing of those windows has been tentatively scheduled for the week of July 29th.
  • Demo of slabs at new elevator shafts has been completed.

Two-week look ahead

  • Electrical rough-in installation will continue through the next three weeks.
  • Installation of mechanical hangers on the Ground and first floors will continue through the next three weeks.
  • Installation of Fan Coil Units will continue through the next three weeks.
  • Piping installation in the toilet room chases will continue through the next three weeks.
  • Demo of slabs at mechanical shafts will continue through the next three weeks.
  • Installation of rigid insulation on the interior face of the exterior walls will continue on all floors through the next three weeks.

Upcoming shut-downs

  • There’s one remaining whole-building domestic water shutdown tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 10th. The entire Plant Science Building (including the east section of the building that has been operational during this construction period) will be closed. No one (other than the Contractor’s personnel involved in the construction), will be allowed into the building. The Contractor will provide a fire watch for the duration of each shutdown.
  • The shutdown for the Air Handling Unit located in PSB 100UA is scheduled to end on Thursday, August 1st.
  • A full building power shutdown is planned for later this summer or in the fall. Coordination between the Contractor and SIPS are ongoing.

Potential occupant disruptions

  • Due to some unforeseen challenges, the repair work at the Breezeway (aka Dog Trot) will continue past the originally communicated Thursday, August 1st date. The western end of the Breezeway – from the Ag Quad to the entrances into Mann Library (on the northside) and Plant Science (on the south side) will be opened to the public by Friday, August 9th. Work on the eastern end of the breezeway – from the Mann & Plant Science entrances to the Mann/Emerson courtyard – will proceed through the end of September.
  • Major deliveries·  A crane will be delivered to the site on Thursday, June 27th to assist with the roofing work. Flaggers will be available to guide traffic as needed.
