Congratulations to Hannah Thomas, Jesus Martinez-Gomez, Shanthanu Krishna Kumar, Jiaming Wen, George Stack, and Jacob Toth, recipients of the Barbara McClintock Graduate Student Award for 2021.
Hannah Thomas is a graduate student with Margaret Frank. Her research is focused on the basis for graft compatibility and the genomic, genetic, and cellular processes that determine graft compatibility in the Solanaceous plants.
Jesús Martínez-Gómez is a graduate student in the program of Chelsea Specht. He researches the processes that give rise to inflorescences or branches of flowers with a specific emphasis on the Onion/Garlic genus (Allium)
Shanthanu Krishna Kumar is a graduate student with Greg Peck. He is using to understand
Jiaming Wen works in the program of Ying Sun. His graduate research concerns data analysis of solar-induced fluorescence to evaluate photosynthesis activities as well as study terrestrial carbon cycle dynamics
George Stack is a graduate student with Larry Smart.
Jacob Toth, also working with Larry Smart, is researching the molecular genetics of important traits in hemp including development of molecular markers for THC and CBD production.
The Barbara McClintock Graduate Student Award is made possible by an endowment from Dr. Robert Rabson to honor outstanding senior graduate students studying in the Plant Sciences (Plant Biology, Plant Pathology & Plant-Microbe Biology, Plant Breeding, Horticulture or Soil & Crop Sciences) at Cornell. It is awarded annually and students are selected based on their academic, research, teaching, and outreach achievements as well as on their potential to continue an outstanding career in the Plant Sciences. Income from the fund is used to support training of the awardees.
