Flanagan and van Es receive professional society awards

The Alliance of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science Societies is a nonprofit organization providing management and administrative, support services to founding members, the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America. ACSESS is pleased to announce the following awards to Professor Harold van Es and Agricultural Science Major Sarah Jane Flanagan.

Sarah Jane Flanagan is one of the two recipients for the 2025 Academic Undergraduate Scholarship. Sarah Flanagan is a fourth-year undergraduate at Cornell University majoring in Agricultural Sciences and minoring in Plant Breeding. Sarah is a research assistant with Cornell University’s Nutrient Management Spear Program, where she studies the impact of manure on below-ground biodiversity.

  • The Academic Undergraduate Scholarship recognizes two meritorious undergraduate students each year pursuing a career in agronomic, crop, or soil science.

Dr. Harold van Es is the recipient of three society awards in 2025: The Werner L. Nelson Award for Diagnosis of Yield-Limiting Factors, Soil Science Applied Research Award, and Soil Science Education and Extension Award. Harold van Es is a Professor of Soil Science at Cornell University with notable research, education and commercialization innovations related to a soil health, computational nitrogen management, and new field research methodologies.

  • The focus of the Werner L. Nelson Award for Diagnosis of Yield-Limiting Factors is on leadership and accomplishments in one or more of the following areas: (a) Development and/or implementation of diagnostic workshops or seminars; (b) development and/or implementation of diagnostic check lists; (c) development and/or implementation of new or improved diagnostic techniques; (d) development and/or implementation of new or improved visual aids supporting the diagnosis of limiting factors; and (e) the nominee’s long-term personal use of diagnostic techniques in systematically identifying yield-limiting factors which have resulted in the application of site-specific measures. The award is provided through the Agronomic Science Foundation by the Werner L. Nelson Fund and administered through the American Society of Agronomy.
  • The Soil Science Education and Extension Award recognizes the educational achievements in soil science. Soil scientists making outstanding educational contributions through activities such as resident, extension, or industrial education are eligible for nomination.
  • The Soil Science Applied Research Award is made to recognize outstanding achievement in applying research principles to solve practical problems in soil science. The evaluators look for: Demonstration of excellence and creativity in applied research or in applying research findings to the solution of problems in soil science; soundness in reasoning, applied research or application skills, and communication of results; and evidence of impact of achievements on the soil science profession or the information-using community.
