SIPS faculty members Alejandra Gandolfo and Adrienne Roeder have received awards from the Botanical Society of America and the American Society of Plant Biologists in recognition of their scientific contributions.
Ale Gandolfo was selected to deliver the Donald Kaplan Memorial Lecture during the Botany 2021 conference, held in July. The Kaplan Lectureship is awarded on the basis of the recipient’s ability to speak about comparative plant development or morphology in a manner suitable for a general botanical audience while providing novel insights. Gandolfo’s lecture Understanding the Plant Fossil Record, Plant Morphology, and Plant Anatomy is critical in the genomic era, centered on how the plant fossil record, in conjunction with plant morphology and anatomy, has allowed scientists to identify evolutionary patterns and generate hypotheses about evolutionary relationships.
The lecture is named for the influential comparative developmental biologist, Donald Kaplan. Gandolfo’s research focuses on the evolution of seed plants with particular attention to flora in the Southern Hemisphere.
Adrienne Roeder received the Charles Albert Shull Award from the American Society of Plant Biology. Roeder is the Nancy M. and Samuel C. Fleming Term Associate Professor and received the award in recognition of her contributions to our understanding of plant development using the tools of computational modeling, live imaging, and molecular genetics.
This monetary award was established to honor Charles A. Shull who was instrumental in the founding of the Society and is made annually for outstanding investigations in the field of plant biology by a member who is generally under forty-five years of age. Roeder will address the Society at its annual meeting in 2022.
