Teaching & Learning in the Diverse Classroom – June 1 – 30, 2021 – a 4-week, online course that gives you an opportunity to explore strategies for inclusive course design, social identity and self-reflection, and pedagogical practices to effectively support student engagement and a sense of belonging across difference.
To register for the SIPS learning community that will meet on Tuesdays from 8:30-9:30 through the month of June, click “yes” on the registration form in answer to the question, “Are you taking the course as part of a learning community?” (Marcia Eames-Sheavly and Melina Ivanchikova will be the facilitators).
Since its formation last fall, the SIPS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Council has identified ways to make our undergraduate majors and classes more inclusive and equitable. We know SIPS must offer professional development for graduate student instructors and faculty that addresses inclusive teaching strategies. In addition to one-day workshops, the SIPS DEI council has been working with the Cornell Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI) on an opportunity for the SIPS community.
The SIPS DEI council and CTI are offering SIPS faculty and graduate students a chance to take the Teaching & Learning in the Diverse Classroom (TLDC) course together in learning communities. Each summer, CTI hosts a 4-week online canvas course that runs from June 1-30th on this topic. It addresses strategies for inclusive course design, social identity and self-reflection, and pedagogical practices that effectively support student engagement and belonging across difference. While centered around classroom instruction, the topics and skills discussed in the course are also highly relevant to mentoring, extension, and other leadership roles.
Learning communities are discussion groups that provide the chance to learn and reflect together, applying course concepts to our environment, disciplines, and particular contexts. For the TLDC this June, SIPS will have weekly learning communities for faculty and graduate students to discuss material from the week’s TLDC modules. Learning communities will reconvene in August before the fall semester to revisit the materials, after a period of reflection. Each learning community will also create shared and individual action plans for our teaching and other work in SIPS. This summer, the learning communities will meet on zoom.
Grad students
Sign up. Please sign up for the TLDC and join your fellow SIPS graduate students in a learning community this summer. CTI Graduate Fellows and SIPS DEI council members Josh Garcia and Kavya Krishnan will facilitate the graduate student learning community. To accommodate field work schedules during the summers, we will decide the dates and times for the graduate student learning community as a group after enrollment. You may also enroll in the course without the learning community portion if the time commitment would be difficult.
Learn more. For detail about this opportunity and/or inclusive teaching instruction, Josh and Kavya will host an open house on Thursday, April 15th at 3pm where you may stop by and ask any questions you may have. Register for the open house or email Josh at jag557@cornell.edu with questions.
Faculty/Staff/Postdocs
Marcia Eames-Sheavly in SIPS and Melina Ivanchikova, associate director for Inclusive Teaching at the Center for Teaching Innovation, will facilitate the faculty learning community. Melina is currently attending monthly faculty meetings held by SIPS Sections where interested faculty members can indicate their interest to her during/after her visit. Postdocs and staff may sign up for either the faculty section or graduate student section, depending on where they feel most comfortable.
