March update from SIPS Director Chris Smart

Dear SIPS community,

There is lots happening in SIPS in March, so this update is a bit longer than usual.

Diversity and Inclusion Survey. A snow day is the perfect time to complete the SIPS Diversity and Inclusion Survey! You should have received this link from me Wednesday. If you have not already done so, please click the link and complete the survey. https://cornell.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9uI6u58qerBOI0l

It takes less than 10 minutes, and we need EVERYONE in the SIPS community to participate.

Diversity Preview Weekend. SIPS (along with EEB and ENT) is excited to have 40 exceptional and diverse undergraduate students from 16 states, Guam, and Puerto Rico visiting campus from March 8th to 11th as part of Cornell’s Diversity Preview Weekend. These students will be attending workshops and seminars to learn how to apply to graduate school and how Cornell is a great place to study science! Please fill out this form if you will attend the on campus catered meals or the SIPS social on March 8th to 11th. And be sure to say ‘Hi’ if you see new faces around SIPS buildings next week! Our SIPS Graduate Student Association has worked very hard on this, well done GSA!

Update on Plant Science renovation. We are pleased to announce the kickoff of the Plant Science Building Needs Assessment and Space Plan Study (FINALLY!). The intent of this study is to identify space needs and opportunities for the School, and create a unifying framework for the five sections in anticipation of future Plant Science Building renovations. As part of this effort, on Monday, March 19th and Tuesday, March 20th members of the architectural firm Payette and their consultants will meet with the SIPS long-term space committee and will be conducting building tours with CALS Facilities staff. They will be reviewing the majority of labs, classrooms, public spaces, and some office space in Plant Science, Emerson, Mann, and Bradfield, during business hours. The goal of these tours is to generally understand the character and range of different space types within each building. Thank you for your accommodation of this effort. They will be back later in the Spring to get input from the SIPS community.

Our three faculty searches are proceeding nicely with updates below:

  • Assistant/Associate Professor of Grape Disease Ecology & Epidemiology (Geneva Campus). Interviews will begin later this month.
  • Assistant/Associate Professor of International Cropping Systems. Interviews for five candidates are being scheduled
  • Assistant/Associate Professor of Plant-Microbe Biology. Interviews for three candidates are being scheduled

Feel free to contact me with questions, concerns, or good news,

Chris
