SiGMA organizes outreach events to give back to the local and NY state community throughout the calendar year.
Last year we participated in Expanding Your Horizons, 4-H Career Explorations, and Saturday Showtime! @ the Sciencenter.

Current Volunteer Opportunities
SiGMA Virtual Concerts
This summer, SiGMA has organized virtual concerts for the folks at the Cayuga Ridge Nursing Home. We hope to continue concerts during the fall and we need volunteers to perform!
Virtual concerts are posted on the SiGMA calendar. If you’d like to perform, fill out our volunteer form! Or email Beatriz directly at ba386@cornell.edu.
You can view past performances on our Instagram!
Trail Maintenance
In 2018, SiGMA adopted the Bob Cameron Loop in the Connecticut Hill Sanctuary. Every year, we visit the trail and cut brush, clear downed trees, paint new markers, and much more
Right now, access to the Cornell Botanic Gardens is limited due to COVID-19. They are looking for volunteers to help get the grounds back into shape once people are allowed back. Work includes trail maintenance, weeding, gardening, and more!
Calls for volunteers are posted on the channel #trail_maintenance on the SiGMA Slack. Usually we only need a couple people to check on the trail but larger events will be posted on the SiGMA calendar.
Volunteer Opportunities Outside SiGMA
There are many outreach opportunities outside of SiGMA. Some of these include: BRB Kids’ Science Day, Graduate Student School Outreach Program (GRASSHPR), Upward Bound, Compass, TST BOCES Tompkins. You can find more information about these programs and contact information here.
Outreach Opportunities from Fall 2020
MAE Outreach Video Contest
Due to the difficult circumstances surrounding the start of the school year, it might be more difficult for new grad students to find and join labs this fall and more difficult for K-12 teachers to keep kids engaged. To address this, we’re announcing the SiGMA Outreach Video Project! Participants make ten-minute videos describing their group’s research, talking about a project they’ve been working on, or giving a tour of their lab.
The guidelines for the New Grad Videos and K-12 Outreach Videos can be found by clicking the links.
