The 2015 Competition was held in Boston, Massachusetts from March 31 to April 3rd. Four of Cornell’s fourteen member team went to competition during their Spring Break. Day 1 involved travel, check-in, and a tour of our sponsor’s (Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc.) headquarters. On Day 2, the buildings were inspected for rule violations and teams stood by their posters to answer question from the judges and other teams about their building. Day 3 was presentations, during which every team was judged on a ten minute presentation explaining the teams’ design, construction process, material testing, and earthquake analysis methods. The presentations were followed by questions from the judges and audience members. Finally, Day 4 was the shake table testing. 17 buildings survived all three ground motions and 22 collapsed during the third ground motion.
Our team’s Sponsor: Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc., is headquartered in Boston, so we got to meet them and tour the firm during our stay in Boston. As a team, it was great to establish a good connection with a successful civil engineering firm. As individuals, it was very insightful to meet and talk with employees who have our dream jobs!
