Survey of Dairy x Beef Use on Dairies in New York

Dairy beef cross calf

Are you a dairy producer in New York State?  The usage of beef on dairy genetics has steadily grown over the last few years, and we are working towards understanding the trends and markets of this strategy.  Has your farm used beef sires as a part of your breeding strategy?

Even if you have not used beef sires in your dairy herd, you are encouraged to take the following survey to fully quantify the usage of beef sires.  If you have not used beef sires, the survey should only take a minute to complete.

We ask you to take this survey, put together by Cornell Cooperative Extension Regional Dairy Specialists. This survey can be accessed using the QR code below, or at the following link:  https://cornell.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4HHU14xa0XN4xg1

  1. The dairy industry needs to develop a new strategy to combat overstocking. 1) It needs to cull more heifer calves as genomic tested Special Fed Veal. 2) It needs to cull more heifer calves, based on daily gain as grain fed veal. 3) It needs to develop a stronger market selling more dairy/beef HEIFER crosses, possibly BEEF bred before sale 4). (thinking about seasonal markets) with the possible use of male sexed semen for beef steers. 5) Whether the calf be a Angus, Limousine or Waygu/Holstein cross, we need a certification process at the auction house.

    1. Thank you for the strategies you listed! If you haven’t taken the chance, please feel free to take the survey and mention them within it so that this information is captured within that data set!
