Class followup, Friday, 3 March

Various bits of followup from this afternoon’s panel:

Seeing the choices a writer makes — Here are some examples of annotated stories, with comments about the writer’s choices:

Jon Franklin’s Mrs. Kelly’s Monster,” 1979 Pulitzer Prize winner for feature writing.
strongly urge you to read the original before reading the interview and annotated version. Unfortunately, the interview appears before the annotations, and gives away some details that are much more powerful if you encounter them first in the story itself.

The Open Notebook‘s “Storygram” series
This series of articles consists of annotated versions of excellent science writing. The rest of The Open Notebook website (sometimes shortened to TON) also has lots of great material.

The March for Science

The main March for Science website includes a statement of mission and principles. These address some of the issues we discussed in class.

The March also has a Facebook page, as does the Ithaca-CNY satellite march.

AAAS Mass Media Fellowship Program

We mentioned the AAAS fellowship programs several times. Here’s the page for the Mass Media Fellowship program that Kelsey Houston-Edwards participated in. Here’s the page for the Science Policy Fellowships that Chris Schaffer described.
