Cornell Women’s Advocacy Network – International Women’s Day Pre-game Lunch

On Saturday, March 8th, the Cornell Women’s Advocacy Network (CWAN) hosted a luncheon followed by an outing to the Cornell Women’s Basketball game in honor of International Women’s Day. The event celebrated progress, resilience, and the power of women’s voices.

The luncheon, hosted by Abigail Macaluso ’20, CWAN President, and Pallavi Nambiar ’20, CWAN Philanthropy Chair, celebrated Cornell women’s sports and female athletes. The event highlighted the achievements of Cornell women and the progress made toward gender equality in athletics. The speakers shared powerful reflections on their journeys. Caroline Wetzel, CFP ’99, emphasized the impact of Title IX and the strides made in leveling the playing field. Dr. Lauren Macaluso ’90 (Cornell Women’s Field Hockey) reflected on how conditions for female athletes at Cornell have evolved since the 1990s. Smita Nalluri ’19 (Cornell Track and Field, Cross Country, Lacrosse) spoke about overcoming personal and professional obstacles and how resilience can lead to unexpected opportunities. Emme Leong ’22 (NBA) inspired us with her story of chasing her dreams, securing her ideal role, and finding a community of like-minded women

Following the luncheon, attendees cheered on the Cornell Women’s Basketball team in their final game of the season. Seeing women excel in sports—and in every field—reinforces our commitment to advocating for equity and opportunity.
