Mental Health Care at Cornell University

University can be very demanding for students. Many students struggle with mental health issues, and it’s important to know that the university you’re attending can accommodate you.

When you’re choosing a university, it’s important to make sure that they offer proper mental health counseling options in case you ever come to need them.

In this article, we’re going to talk about Cornell University’s mental health options and outline how they compare to some other prestigious universities. Cornell University has developed a reputation for providing some of the best mental health care to its students, which is a rarity these days compared to other Ivy League universities who are currently lacking in mental health support for their students. We’re going to explain why that is.

What does Cornell offer their students?

Cornell’s Integrated Services department is responsible for helping provide students with mental health care access, and they offer a number of options for their students. These include:

  • Individual & group counseling. Mental health treatments offered at Cornell University revolve around therapeutic and psychiatric treatments via their CAPS program. The university is equipped to treat a wide variety of mental health issues. If you’d rather join a group session, those are available as well.
  • Psychiatry. Not only do students have the option to talk to someone, but if they require medication for a mental disorder, that is also an options through the Cornell CAPS program.
  • 24/7 on-call consultations. If you or another student are having a mental health crisis and need to talk to someone immediately, there are 24/7 call services available at Cornell.
  • Let’s Talk drop-ins. Don’t have time to set an appointment or simply forgot? Cornell has CAPS counselors located at various campus location. There is no need to make an appointment. Simply show up and talk.
  • Workshops. A large focus recently has been put on self-care and self-management within the mental health world. As such, Cornell offer workshops whereby counselors teach students practical skills to help manage and reduce a broad range of mental health issues.
  • Behavioral health consultation. Behavioral health consultants will work directly with your primary care medical team to help better your well-being.

These options are quite comprehensive, and provide students with a large number of opportunities and guarantees.

Cornell Compared to Other Universities

Compared to some other prestigious universities, Cornell is actually doing quite well in regard to taking care of their students’ mental health problems. As noted above, a number of Ivy League colleges have earned a reputation for neglecting student mental health care.

Yale, among all universities sampled, was graded with a dismal F in regard to taking care of their student’s mental health care. Harvard was ranked with a D-minus, whereas Princeton, Brown, and Columbia universities earned a D.

While Cornell may not have been graded on this particular study, it’s safe to say that is because Cornell is known for having high-quality and reliable mental health resources for its students.

Mental Health Could Still Be Improved

While Cornell may have a pretty strong mental health options, it’s not perfect. There are a couple things they could do to encourage further improvements.

  • Provide more education for students regarding mental health. As it stands, many students only seek mental health treatments when they have done their own studying or been referred to by parents or friends.
  • Encourage students to study about mental health on their own, so that they can be prepared should any mental health problems arise. Students should be encouraged to familiarize themselves with mental health. This is especially easy in today’s technologically driven world. Mental health information is at your fingertips on websites dedicated to mental health awareness. One such example is E-counseling. These resources offer mental health information in a way non-professionals and students can understand.

Cornell University is known for providing high-quality mental health care for its students, but things aren’t perfect. Nevertheless and looking at the big picture, it is nice to see that they outdo their Ivy League counterparts.
