AI in Web Development becoming prevalent

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is ubiquitous today. We are interacting with thinking machines at an unprecedented level and in ways that were unimagined earlier. The friendly lady who answers queries regarding the savings account is an AI-enabled bot, the helpful Netflix service that recommends new shows is an AI algorithm and the voice that gives directions on the Google maps is an AI assistant. But what exactly is AI? Artificial intelligence refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by computer systems. AI has transformed industries ranging from manufacturing to digital services. And in this digital era, AI is reshaping web designing and web development.

Web development has come a long way from simple text-based pages of yesteryears as the internet has become increasingly accessible and people spend considerable time on the web for virtually everything. Artificial Intelligence is now making websites more engaging, responsive and ultimately more human by offering voice optimization, automation and rich user experience.

Voice Search

The consumers of today want their questions to be answered quickly and accurately in this era of quick internet speeds, and voice search is the right solution. Voice search has already come in vogue with the arrival of Cortana, Siri and Alexa; and is set to get better in the future. AI-enabled voice search mimics human conversation, permitting longer and conversational questions, and allowing the users to explore things with the help of pictures. The e-commerce and banking websites are prominent examples of voice-activated search.

AI has automated everything from web design and web development to product suggestions and content development. Global industry leaders such as Facebook and Google have launched AI toolkits to simplify AI adoption in web applications. Web developers are seeking to integrate website chatbots and other tools in existing web platforms through natural language techniques. The latest AI-enabled platforms come with automated basic blocks that can be integrated into the website building process. Whether there is a requirement of a chatbot or a smart app, these ready-made web building blocks make tasks easier, faster and effective.

Web Design

The days of building websites from scratch are becoming a distant memory as integrating AI-based algorithms is the latest development in HTML website development. AI-enabled platforms have made it easier for web developers to decide on web design, layout and content, and create a better web interface. For example, AI startup The Grid designs and creates custom websites in just a matter of minutes with the help of AI. The users input the text and media, and The Grid builds a website that updates itself as the content is added each time. A business can thus make alterations to its website without the need to consult a design and tech team, thereby making design and web development more accessible.

In the earlier days, user interface design was a cumbersome process. The design was drawn on a whiteboard, captured within a photograph and manually translated into a working HTML wireframe to begin the development process. Now, thanks to AI, the whiteboard content can be captured in a photo and uploaded onto an AI routine so as to generate a prototype website. In a related development, the Oxford-based Diffblue has developed an AI-based solution to improve code testing. The testing engine is currently available for Java and C, and plans are afoot to expand it to other programming languages such as Python, Javascript and C#.

It has become commonplace for websites to pop up AI-powered chatbots to address user queries. For instance, in the online health industry, website visitors prefer to engage with chatbots as opposed to waiting in a long queue at the hospital reception. Chatbots boost business sales by interpreting human feelings and predicting user reactions. They also pave the way for better communication by making the interaction more normal and less mechanical.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is being largely driven by artificial intelligence in contemporary times. Google’s AI RankBrain, an AI system, is the third most influential factor used by Google to rank company websites. Google groups the content pages into similar topics and uses customer data to accurately predict the searches and purchases. Moreover, there is a plethora of hosting services, ranging from the cheapest hosting services to prohibitively expensive ones.

User Experience

User experience (UX) is a crucial factor in today’s day and age. AI allows for a personalized, efficient and comprehensive user experience by customizing websites in ways that were once considered impossible. AI ascertains a customer’s mental state, situation and intention before generating a response, and this allows for a seamless communication and rich customer care experience. For example, chatbots act akin to in-store sales associates, suggesting different choices and answering customer queries. Personalized content, in the form of videos, blogs and articles, is also becoming a reality as AI suggests new music and videos based on the past behavior of the users and shows content that is tailor-made to the audience.

To sum up, just like the internet revolutionized the world in the last two decades, AI is set to transform the landscape over the next couple of decades. And in the arena of websites and website development, AI will herald a paradigm shift in the way that websites create and nurture user experience.
