The trend of optimizing websites for mobile

The inception of Google’s mobile-first indexing in July 2018, hallmarks the importance of having a mobile-friendly website. This move toward mobile-first indexing supports the rise in mobile search traffic. Data compiled by Smart Insights found that searchers spend two times more time on mobile devices than desktops.

Why is having a mobile-friendly website important? According to Google Webmasters, “Having mobile-friendly content is still helpful for those looking at ways to perform better in mobile search results.”

This means that if you want to capitalize on better mobile search results, your website should be mobile-friendly. However, this can be challenging for businesses both large and small. From responsive design to mobile-friendly font size, there’s plenty to implement for maximum mobile visibility.

The following top tips for a mobile-friendly website in 2018 serves as your roadmap to mobile success.

Responsive Design: Having a responsive design makes your website viewable across multiple devices. This can significantly reduce the workload needed when developing a mobile-friendly site.

“With a design like this, you’re way ahead of your competition,” Brian Rashid of Forbes said. “And it positions your website to seamlessly cater to newer devices with which users use to surf the Internet e.g. smartwatches, IoT devices, etc.”

Though a responsive design is a bit different than a mobile-friendly website, it should be included in providing an exceptional user experience.

There are a lot of website themes that serve up a responsive design. A responsive design theme will include cascading style sheets, as well as flexible image sizing, spacing, and on-page layouts.

High-Resolution Site Images: High-resolution images provide a powerful user experience that make mobile viewing more engaging and attractive to users. This has a lot to do with the innovative technology integrated into smartphones.

Provide a Desktop Option: One of the biggest challenges many business shave when it comes to mobile-friendliness is that the desktop experience is lost. However, you can keep your website’s desktop view optional for your site visitors.

Add a “desktop version” option somewhere in the mobile interface that lets users choose which version of your site they want to experience.

Google Accelerated Mobile Page (AMP): The implementation of the Google Accelerated Mobile Page (AMP) has made it easier for developers and business owners to optimize their websites for mobile. AMP can speed up a page and improve user engagement.

Mobile Font Size: Font size is very important when it comes to providing an optimal user experience. For example, if the font is 12 point or less on mobile, it could be very difficult for a user to read.

The best font for a mobile-friendly website is 16px. Pros recommend not having a mobile font less than 14px. If a user is squinting to see your marketing message or product description, they are most likely going to abandon your website for your competitors.

Call To Action (CTA) Buttons: CTA buttons are another essential element to think about when developing a mobile-friendly website. You want users to visit your site via mobile, and you definitely want them to follow the same buyer journey you have integrated into your desktop site.

To do this, be sure your CTA buttons are large and bold. For instance, a CTA button that is 44px by 44px gives the best user experience, according to research provided by an Apple.
