Thursday, January 12
10:00am to 2:30pm
701 Clark Hall

This one-day workshop for early-career graduate students in the physical sciences and engineering is the guide to academic success you didn’t know you needed. Sponsored by Cornell University Library and the Center for Bright Beams.

10:00 am – Scientific Information You Cannot Find with Google
Google and Google Scholar are convenient ways to search for information. But are they always suitable, trustworthy, and complete? Learn about several highly relevant academic databases including Scopus, Web of Science, Engineering Village, Scifinder-n, and Springer Materials.

10:45 am – Snack break!

11:00 am – Organize Your Data
Good data organization is the foundation of a research project. Learn best practices for managing files and data storage, working with data in spreadsheets, and optimizing “data packages” to fulfill research data-sharing requirements and to maximize your research impact.

11:30 am – Record Keeping
Well-documented experiments facilitate new research; provide crucial context for your research methods, results, and analysis; and help you keep track of specific details. This session will introduce you to available tools, including electronic lab notebooks, online project management and collaboration platforms, and reference managers.

12:15 pm – Lunch! (with opportunity for follow-up questions and demos of research tools!)

1:00 pm – Digital Privacy and Surveillance
Much of scholarly life happens online. This workshop offers an overview of privacy and anti-surveillance concerns for researchers, response strategies, and relevant services offered by Cornell University Library that are available for follow-up.

1:45 pm – Tools and Strategies for Your Future Career Decisions
Susi Varvayanis from the Graduate School’s Careers Beyond Academia will empower you to take action on various career possibilities after Cornell. Use your time here wisely so you can advance your academic goals and stand out as a candidate in your desired employment sector based on informed choices.
