Black Rot on Honeycrisp

Botryosphaeria obtusa causes black rot.  Infections that occur before, during, or shortly after bloom can remain quiescent on the sepals and then initiate calyx end decays as fruit begin to ripen. Late summer infections appear as black spots at lenticels. Decays that develop during storage are very firm with a dark brown or almost black color.  Completely decayed fruit can be almost rubbery and often have black discoloration around each fruit lenticel giving the decayed fruit a speckled appearance.     (2006)
