You may have heard about PATCH’s point system at our first meeting. If you missed it or need a refresher, here’s a summary!
What is the point system?
The point system is a way to reward you for your participation in PATCH and pre-health activities! Earning points puts you in good standing, allowing you to attend trips and special events, and designates you as a PATCH member. If you earn enough points, you’ll receive special recognition!
How do I get in good standing?
You must earn 20 points each semester, at least 10 of which must be “essential” points. The other 10 can be either essential or supplemental points. Once you do point-bearing activities, you’ll need to submit evidence.
What are essential points?
Essential points can be earned in a variety of ways:
- PATCH-Sponsored Events (Meetings, workshops, and events created by PATCH) – 2 points
- PATCH Mentorship Events (Speed-dating, socials, meet-ups) – 1 point
- PATCH Community Service (Community service events run by PATCH) – 1.5 points per hour
For a more in-depth list, please refer to this powerpoint.
What are supplemental points?
Supplemental points can also be earned in a variety of ways:
- Subcommittee Participation – 1 point per hour
- Clinical Experience (experiences with patient interaction) – 1/2 point per hour
- Non-PATCH, Non-Clinical Experience (outside volunteering, tutoring, or summer research) – 1/4 point per hour
For a more in-depth list, please refer to this this powerpoint.
How do I submit the activities I’ve done for points?
If we’re taking attendance, no need to submit anything (e.g. G-Body meetings, workshops, subcommittee meetings). If not, though — like at a community service event or a mentorship meet-up — you’ll need to take a picture of yourself or something else at the event as evidence, and submit it to this form.
How do I know how many points I’ve earned?
Check the point tracker here, which is updated weekly. If you’re not on the list and you’ve attended a meeting, please reach out to Vivian (smc448).
How do I earn awards?
If you earn 60 points for the year as a freshman, 70 points as a sophomore, or 85 points as a junior or senior, you’ll receive an annual excellence award. You can also get a pin at graduation for earning an average of 37.5 points each semester that you’re a member of PATCH! Never fear — this isn’t as hard as it sounds, since you can earn tons of points by getting engaged in summer activities, on-campus community service, and shadowing/clinical experiences. A day of shadowing could earn you 4-5 points, and a regular, full-time, clinical summer internship would earn you 160 points for the year!
