A Rapid Response Fund grant from the Cornell Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future has allowed Cornell researchers and collaborators from the Alliance for Contraception in Cats and Dogs to mark and monitor stray animals that have been treated with contraception and rabies vaccines from those who have not. Eloise Cucui, a student at the CVM and a member of the interdisciplinary research team led by Cornell fiber scientist Margaret Frey, veterinarian Elizabeth Berliner, and electrical engineer Edwin Kan, has conducted initial successful trials with shelter dogs in Romania. This new technology is meant to combat the transmission of rabies and other diseases in stray dogs that presents a serious health problem for animals and humans.
